How to Double Club Membership
Step 1 Cap Membership
- Creates Scarcity
- Clear Goal
Step 2 Assemble Crack Recruiting Team
- 10% of members volunteer for The Team
Step 3 Develop Master Prospect List
- Each prepares a top 20-prospect list
Step 4 Sift and Recruit
- Each recruits 3 new members within 90 days
Step 5 Duplicate
- Each new member develops a top 20-list of prospects
- Each new member recruits a new member within 90 days
- Duplicate each quarter
Aim
Outline a 5-Step Recruiting Model that doubles membership and fosters
perpetual membership growth.
Assumptions
- Recruiting new members is a top priority
- At best, 10% of existing Club members will recruit new members
- Social network theory tells us that we each know 2,000 people, some will
make great Rotarians
- Six Degrees of Separation theory tells us we can reach anybody on the
planet within 6 generations of contacts, so we have the ability to reach all
ideal candidates in our community
Step 1 Cap Membership
- At a Club meeting, ask each member to write down the ideal size for
their Rotary Club.
- The Club Secretary determines the average number, rounds it up and
reports the result to members
- This number is the cap for membership for the next couple of Rotary
years.
- This exercise creates an environment of scarcity and it results in a
clear goal.
Step 2 Assemble a SWAT Team
- Assemble a crack recruiting team who will recruit one new member each
within 45 days.
Step 3 Develop a Master Prospect List
- Team members write down their 20 best prospects
- Team members meet to collate a master prospect list
- Duplicate names and classification issues are sorted out
- The prospect list is presented in confidence to all Club members and
approved
Step 4 Sift for Rotary Interest
- Each team member calls their prospects and sifts for interest
- Prospects are mailed a brochure and referred to the Club web site (or
Rotarys site) for information
- Those who demonstrate interest are invited to a Rotary luncheon (free
lunch)
- This Rotary Luncheon is a special event with a good Rotary speaker and
an awesome program
- Using 3-way calling, follow-up with the prospect and a veteran Rotarian
who can answer questions and speak enthusiastically about the benefits of
Rotary membership, as well as financial and time expectations.
- Induct new members with fanfare
Step 5 Duplicate
-
- Each new member is asked to recruit a new member within 90-days.
- Each new member writes down their 20 best prospects, and begins the
recruiting process with the help of their sponsor.
Case Studies
A Modest Effort
- The Rotary Club of Sunny Beach has struggled with membership.
- Membership has declined over the years and now hovers around 30 members.
- The Club is stuck in a rut, apathy is creeping in and the fun is
creeping out.
- The Club sets a membership cap of 50 members and wants to achieve this
within 18 months.
- There are only 20 new memberships available, they are scarce and
precious.
- The Membership Swat Team comprises 3 existing members (10% of total
membership)
- These 3 existing members each recruit a new member within 45 days.
- Next, the 3 new members recruit a new member each within 90 days.
- The system duplicates so that the rate of growth averages 1 new member
per month.
- Within a year, the Club has 42 members, 12 are new members (+ 40%)
- A high energy, enthusiastic and productive environment attracts even
more new members.
- Six months later, the Club has reached 50 members 20 of them are new.
A Really Aggressive Effort
- The Rotary Club of Ocean Palms has 150 members.
- A few years ago, the Club had over 200 members.
- The Club sets a goal to be the BIGGEST CLUB in the state.
- The biggest club in the state has 275 members.
- The Club cap membership at 300 members, and wants to achieve this within
18 months.
- There are now only 150 memberships available scarce and precious.
- The Membership SWAT Team comprises 15 members (10% of total membership).
- These 15 existing members each recruit TWO new members within 45 days =
30 new members.
- 30 new members each recruit a new member within 90-days = 30 more new
members.
- The system duplicates so that the rate of growth averages 10 new members
per month.
- 15 months later, the Club reaches their goal of 300 members.
- The Rotary Club of Ocean Palms is now the biggest Club in the state.
- With capped membership, awesome people are lining up to get into such a
dynamic civic organization.
- Scarce membership forces the Board to look internally at existing
members.
- Deadwood is gracefully culled out to make room for new energetic
members.
- Decisions, decisions should the Club up their cap to 350 members?
- Whats the biggest Club in Rotary? San Antonio at 750 members. Hmmm
- The Rotary Club of Ocean Palms rocks!
