Ryan Parham, Manager of Radio Shack was honored recently with a Paul Harris Fellowship by his fellow Reveille Rotarians.  Parham has provided stellar Rotary service through Boots & BBQ, delivering dictionaries to all Rogers County third graders, provided “Shoes for Orphan Souls” and has served on the Finance committee.
Parham said, “As a reasonably new member, I did not realize the impact of my work until attending a Mid-America President Elect Training Conference. When I saw how much the work impacted local, national, and international, I was amazed at how powerful Rotarians’ work impacted mankind. Many of the projects are emotionally moving; delivering dictionaries to all Rogers County third graders sounded routine until I saw their faces light up and smiles decimated the room.  Teachers were thrilled that, for once, they did not have to spend their own personal money, buying classroom aids.  Many students did not know how to use one and when explained, were proud to have a personally monogrammed book to look up the meanings of words. The children hugged us and were so very appreciative.  The teachers used the opportunity for a math calculation and learning process, demonstrating the cost of the dictionaries singularly, per student, per class, per school, and per county to emphasize Rotary’s contribution. The teachers also showed the students how to use them, searching fun words to reflect greater meanings into their life.  Such simple tasks and fun committee work became a life-changing event for many.  I am proud to be a Rotarian and having a wonderful time doing it. To see a child have a brand new pair of socks and their first pair of shoes put on their feet would bring anyone to tears.  Their faces change from dismal with not much hope for life to smiles and giggles.  We take so much as common place that other nationalities have never experienced. I am proud to be a Rotarian and having a wonderful time doing it. I am also looking forward to this year’s Boots & BBQ and heading up the teams with Kansas City Sanctioned BBQ Association and certifications.”
Parham holds a BA in Finance (1994) from Hardin-Simmons and is married with one son, Will 4 years young and a daughter due in April. Parham moved to Claremore in1998 to manage Radio Shack.
