Ambassadors of Goodwill
To serve as a Rotary University Teacher, one must have a sense of
mission as an ambassador of goodwill. University Teachers are asked
to speak not only at Rotary functions, but at many non-Rotary
functions, civic organizations, and other forums. By nature of their
role as educators, grant recipients find themselves serving as
goodwill ambassadors to their students and colleagues on a daily
basis. Likewise, University Teachers also represent their home
country and college or university to the people of their host
country.
Teaching in a developing country can often present new challenges
and unexpected adversity. Grant recipients sometimes discover that
the institution where they are teaching is lacking resources taken
for granted in other countries — textbooks or computer equipment,
for example. One former teacher reported that in the African city in
which he was teaching, the power supply would be cut off at almost
any time of the day — and always without warning. While it is
impossible to prepare for all such contingencies, grant recipients
are challenged to face these kinds of problems with equanimity. By
doing so, many participants find that the teaching experience is a
learning experience as well.
Upon returning home, grant recipients are expected to share their
experiences with the people of their home countries and the local
Rotarians who sponsored their grants. Sharing these experiences
continues to foster international understanding and often results in
the development of international partnerships focusing on
humanitarian needs and projects.
