TRAVELOGUE

(Most recent entry is first.)

3/31/02 Hello everyone! My name is Tatiana and as you know I'm Exchange student from Russia and I'm already in the Mount Vernon, USA for the 8 months. The time
flies very quickly, so it's hard to believe that half of my Exchange program just passed. This Exchange program did for me really a great job. This program taught me how to be straightforward, determined, strong in my decisions, to share with the culture of my country, and to know really a lot about the country where I'm hosting -in the United States of America! At first, I really knew the language of the country -American English Language, so I can talk, make the presentation programs, know the history of the USA, to introduce with the culture, listen to the music, see the movies, also to make jokes and besides to understand the origins of the language! Iknew the language before I came to the USA, but there is the deal -I knew the British English Language, where I was study at school. For me it was really amazing new experience to be the Cheerleader for the Varsity Basketball Team in the MVHS!! I just really love to cheer the team,
to give the spirit, so with my cheerleader squad we were having fun! I just very appreciated to everybody who gave me the chance to participate in such activity. Firstly, in my country we don't have Cheerleaders, but we have the Basketball team. Secondly, I just saw the Cheerleaders only in the American
movies. So, now the season is over and in the memory I got 2 certificates: for being in the cheerleading squad and for the most approved cheerleader in the squad, and the Letter. For me it was really great honor! On the 3/1/02 with my friends we went to the Spriefield to celebrate my 17th Birthday. It was really unique because it was in the American- way: go to the movie, go the mall!! For the next day my dad -Igor(an orthopedic surgeon) came for my Birthday! It was really the greatest gift that I ever had for my Birthday in my life!! He was staying with my 3rd host -family (Scott & Charlotte) for 10 days!! It was really great time, I showed the town where I living, MVHS which I attending, the Land of the Ozarks!! I had also another activity but it was in Spriefield it was for the Exchange student as me, we were invited for the "International Day" where the
Exchange students in the Missouri gather together and make the presentations for the American students, as it was at Glendale HS. It was so interesting because it was really unique chance to show to the American students how the
Exchange student's life is look like!!
I also had the trip to the St.Lois "The Gateway to the West"! It was really majestic trip because I was introduced with the culture of that town, which made for me really great impressions with it's marvelous skyscrapers, banks,
Arch, Science Center, museums!!
I made my trip to the top of the Arch where I could get an unforgettable view of the town! I was really surprised how on the one side you can see another state
Illinois, and from another state Missouri! But anyway it was really terrific!! In the conclusion, I can say that Rotary Youth Exchange program for me made really a lot! At first, it opened my eyes to the world, helped me to be the part of the world! Secondly, gave me a unique chance to share with the culture and traditions of my country, to broaden horizon and knowledge of Russia (my hometown
Vladivostok)!! Thirdly, to become very educative person and to enlarge my knowledge about the United States of America, learning the language, introduce with the culture, traditions, holidays, history, and activities! Fourthly, to make friends from all over the World. In my view, it's great when you have lot's friends from all over the world; the world becomes really smaller for all of us! In general, I can say that to be an Exchange student is always interesting and fun!
Thank you.
3/12/02 Hello everybody!! how are you? i'm doing really good!! my daddy he visited me for 10 days for my birthday in the Mt.vernon, MO, USA!! so it was fun 'cause i showed the school, teachers, Reabilitation Center for his Profession and Specialists i made different activities for him!! so he is already flew home!!!  today i've got 2 certificate for the cheerleaders and the letter!! i was so happy 'cause it was my really first time!!!!
and now i want to share with you with such information!!
it's already 3 months ago as i lost my brother .....
in the memory for that i decided to dedicate the poem to my brother
Roman.....
i alredy published different articles about that and if it will be possible  if you will like my poem to publish in  different places as the local newspaper so then you can just mail to me the copy of that newspaper !!!
i think you are understanding Roman is my brother and as a sister i dedicated in the memory of him....thank you i'm very appriciated with that !!

 Poem: My Brother.
by Tatiana Kouzmina .

If ever life will never stop,
And I will be so strong;
I know that I will go forward,
If ever life will never stop.
 It's hard to believe that,
There is no brother with me, anymore,
We used to read, we used to play, together,
We used to share every happy moment, together,
And now it's hard to go through the life all alone.
It makes me sad, it makes me cry
To realize that he is not alive.
Sometimes I ask my question -Why?
But there is nothing on my respond.
I know only one -It's Life,
And nothing I can do .
I only knew that he was my
The greatest brother, friend in my life!
 I will continue his work.
What he was supposed to do.
 I know it's hard but I will do .
I'm not cry, I'm strong enough.
 I'm not scared Life,
 Life is the greatest journey;
Through the years on boat.
When you with your family, friends,
They are closed to us,
Who better understand?
What the Life means to us,
Who help us with the article or the cheer word?
Who break the spell of our Loneliness!

 thank you
with the best wishes to your family

Sunday, October 07, 2001 5:18 PM Hello!
As I promised I continue writing an article about my exchange program in the Mt. Vernon, MO. I'm living and studying here in the USA only 2 weeks. On the 09-1-01 with my host family I visited Kansas City. We visited the museum "The Of The Steamboat Arabia". It was so interesting to know about American History and to see plenty of historical jewelry, gold and other precious items when she sank. The tale of the lost Arabia and its precious cargo became something of a legend. Its hoard of buried wealth captivated and challenged treasure hunters for more than a century. Finally, in 1988, an old, worn river map helped lead the way to the mysterious lost treasure. It was really interesting to know! In the evening we visited the downtown of the City, there were so many skyscrapers and I can't believe my eyes that I saw that building with my own eyes! We took the Carriage Ride thru the downtown. It was really wonderful and I thank my host family that they gave me opportunity to visit Kansas City!

On the 09-10-01 it was Colleen's birthday my host sister! With our friends: Robin, Gene, we visited Springfield. At first we saw the movie about the "American Outlaws". It was so interesting because that movie was about
American history, about cowboys anyway about life at that period of time!  Then we visited Italian Restaurant everything was good!!

I introduced with lots of members of the Rotary Club. With Scott we took the ride thru the country and the area of the Mt. Vernon. It was great!

Then I visited Mike's family. He is the president of the Rotary Club  Mt. Vernon. It was also really nice and I showed my pictures of my city  Vladivostok. With his daughters we saw the movie" The Problem Child" it was really funny and it was a good comedy!

Last weekends with my host family we had a long trip to the Pittsburgh, PA. It was Kitty's dad birthday he is 80th years old. We crossed Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and then it was Pittsburgh! We took some  pictures of the downtown of the PA. We also visited the University of Pittsburgh. I read that that building was that tallest between NY and Chicago. But in Moscow there is the one the tallest Moscow University! It was really great and we had a really wonderful time!

On the 09-11-01 it was a really difficult time for all American People and to all over the world. It was the Attack on the America. It was made by the terrorists from Afghanistan. It was really terrible and sad! I learnt when I was at school and it was really terrible and I couldn't believe it that it happened. All my family, my friends and me we are Russian People really sorry about this terrible tragedy. When we were in Pittsburgh I came to the store and it was Donation for the Red Cross and I put 10$ I know that it's not so big money but it is small part from Russian People from me and all my family! I will try my best to help with everything that I can to help to American Families!

Yesterday with Les I visited the Rotary Meeting and it was first Program that I had speech for 25 minutes. Everybody was enjoyed to know about my country, my city, about Russia. I was really appreciated that I can help American People to know about my culture as I can help my friends that don't have a chance to visit English Speaking Countries to know about American life style, cultures and traditions!

This week at school we have spirit week because we have the homecoming of the ball game. All students were wearing Hawaii clothes, camouflage and it was really so unusual and interesting!!!!
I met with lots of friends at school and  in the Rotary Club! I really enjoy everything that everybody teach me new stuff! I really thankful to y Rotary Club- Vladeco -Vladivostok that they chose me to participate in the Youth exchange Program and I really thankful to the Rotary Club in the Mt. Vernon that they gave me a chance to learn about American life style and cultures.

Thank you very much!!
I will continue writing about my exchange program.
Warmly,
Russian student - Tatiana

Hello!! My name is Tatiana . I'm from Russia, my native city is Vladivostok. I'm the exchange student by Rotary club. I'm just now only for a few days living here. I'm the inbound student for the District 6110 for a whole year. Mt.Vernon is situated in the  state of Missouri.  I suppose that Missouri is a great city to visit and a nice place to live. And I know that there is the note like: Missouri - is a place where the rivers run. You know that I'm so happy of my exchange. I'm so, so thankful to those people who organized my exchange.  I'm so glad that there is such organization which help students from all over the world to visit  various  countries  and to
enlarge their knowledge about  different countries, cultures, traditions and just share opinions  and ideas with everybody.

What about me?  It is my first experiment with education in the USA.  I'm studying at Mt. Vernon  High School.  I'm in the 11th grade.  I'm taking the following classes :
1- American Literature/ Composition
2- US History
3- Family Relationship
4- Court
5- P. Education
6- Spanish language.
I guess that all these classes would help me to understand and Enlarge my horizon about Missouri, Mt.Vernon.  Spanish would help me to know another language, because I read articles, newspapers and saw that Spanish is also popular language in the USA like English.  I can say that everybody is great easy to deal with me.

I have made plenty of friends in the Mt.Vernon.  I can see that everybody  is very hospitality with me.  I'm also very thankful for my host-family that agreed to be my host family -Les, Kitty , Colleen . And I'm also so thankful for Marji that she is my  counselor. I can see that Americans they are so generous, considerable, straightforward  people. I think that it's great!!

When I was with my counselor, Marji, in the Bank  she helped me to open my checking account.  I never did it in Russia. So it was the first new thing that I knew. And besides there was the box where people put  some money and I guess that it was my duty to help people and I put there1$. And Marji told that it was nice!  I believe that people should help other people who have some problems with their health  with everything that they could! It's my opinion!! So of course I would  each time  write to you   new stories which would  happen with me!!!

Today we visited Branson. We saw a great movie. It was about the Civil War.

As for me I like and enjoy the history about USA, cities. I found  Branson a really interesting  place to visit. It was l of show's ,café's , and a Walmart. And you can meet  many pleasant people. My host-family, Johannamez , and I  visited a café. The chicken strips were tasty! I enjoyed them!

On Sunday  we visited with  Kitty and Johanmenz and Colleen church. And it was nice to seat and sing songs. It's much different from our Russian church. Where people can come and sit or just put some candles for our relatives . I suppose it's nice!!
Warmly ,
Tatiana Kouzmina -Russian student
