ROTARY DISTRICT 6110
WHARF (Worldwide
Humanitarian Alliance
with Rotarians and Friends)
web site: www.ri6110.org/wharf
Wharf Listing by
Numbers
WHARF members
are located in the USA and
Canada. All have agreed to share information and
resources with fellow members. This
group is really a network with no by-laws, no membership dues, etc. Specialist, Jack
Maxwell of the World Community Service Resource Network
(WCSRN) (see www.Rotarywcsrn.org) started WHARF in February 1999. This
information is updated as changes occur and/or new members are added.
The table below includes:
·
Contacts are complete with mailing address,
title, phone, fax number and email addresses -- all hyper-linked for instant
access with a click of your mouse;
·
Short description briefly describes what
the organization does. This may
include some history and should give a basic description of the mission of
the organization;
·
What We Ship indicates in the most generic of
terms what the organization ships or the type of humanitarian aid provided;
·
Where We Ship includes the countries or zones
this organization has successfully shipped humanitarian aid to in the past;
·
the Membership Number on the title line is a number assigned to each
organization upon joining WHARF;
·
the Project name or organization and web site is shown in the second
column of the title line;
·
Rotary or non-profit (Rotary/NGO) is shown in the third
column of the title line. We are
trying to partner with other Rotary and other non-profit groups to leverage
our resources;
·
The fourth column of the title line
labeled FNC refers to the function
and assets of an organization as follows:
|
|
|
S - supplier of equipment, supplies
or materials to projects requesting related aid
|
|
|
T - transportation, drug re-dating
services, or other service providers
|
|
|
I - information resource
|
|
|
P - project sponsors, i.e., actually
do overseas projects, send teams or go over and build things, etc
|
|
|
O – other - can include
relationships with WHARF, WCSRN or some other affiliated resource which
doesn't fit neatly into one of the above categories
|
|
This database is
being shared with several other organizations and can be linked from
non-profit organization web sites. You
may search for specific terms through the drop-down menu of Edit and
Find. Our hope is that some
organization with needs in a developing country will find our web site and
scroll down the Where We Ship
column to see if their country is listed.
A look in the What We Ship
column will determine if their needs may be met with what that organization
ships. If all this fits, then they can
obtain the contact information, etc.
Our hope is to supply as much information as possible in one location
and eliminate their need to surf the web to locate each North American
organization that can help them.
The purpose of this document is not only to share our
information, but also to CREATE AWARENESS AND TAKE ACTION. This just happened to be Rotary
International President Frank Devlyn's slogan for his term as President from
July 2000 through June 2001. Another
purpose is to house as many organizations in one location as possible. We are comfortable that the number of
organizations shipping humanitarian aid from North
America is well over 200.
Our goal is to reach as many of these as possible and encourage them
to join. If you know other organizations that should be listed in this
database and be furnished with this kind of information on a regular basis,
please e-mail Jack Maxwell at jackmaxw@cox.net.

Tulsa, Oklahoma Rotarian Jack Maxwell started MSNI, a 501(C)(3) non-profit
corporation, in 1992 following a trip to the Philippines. It consists of two 6000 sq. ft.
warehouses. We rent one for income and
use the other for our operations. Since 1996 MSNI has shipped 109 40’
containers of medical equipment and supplies to 32 different countries.
Most of our
shipments are WCS projects with other Rotary clubs overseas. However, MSNI has partnered with NGOs and a
few Missionaries involved with medical missions. In addition, we have helped 8 or 10 local
and regional charities by making donations of medical inventory for their
needs and have helped several Rotary Districts start up a warehouse project
like our District 6110 MSNI. A manual,
available on our web site, was developed to assist in the start-up of other
humanitarian aid warehouse projects.

The Medical
Mission Program began in January 1999 as a domestic and international community
service project. We have worked in
collaboration with Operation Condor in shipments and staff to Peru and also
with Intervol at the Rosebud Indian Reservation in S.D. Intervol has a 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse of
recycled medical equipment and has been our main supplier thus far.

Rotarian J. B. Roberts and the eight District
Governors of Texas started HUNGER PLUS in 1998. HUNGER PLUS works with Breedlove Dehydrated
Foods and other food suppliers to feed the desperate starving people all over
the world, as well as providing other humanitarian aid such as medical
equipment , educational supplies, etc.
The role of HUNGER PLUS is to provide the food
component with an overall effort designed to break the hunger/poverty cycle
by partnering with other Rotary programs in helping underdeveloped countries
to become self-sufficient. Hunger Plus
has been approved to work with USDA and USAID.

Breedlove Dehydrated Food
Plant in Lubbock, TX
is a wonderful example of a project that was started with the help of many
Rotarians in West Texas. It receives donated fresh produce and
vegetables by the box-carload, dehydrates it and mixes it in custom blends of
soup mix. One pound of dehydrated soup
yields 25 or more servings at less than 3-1/2 cents per serving This soup mix
has a shelf life of over two years and is ideal for disaster relief, food for
the starving in Africa and emergency Red
Cross relief efforts. This plant has
the capacity to produce 500,000 pounds of dehydrated food per week -- over 10
million servings. It is ideal for
Rotary projects domestically as well as WCS matching grant hunger projects
worldwide.
